This books tells the story of photograph (Mario Dirks) who won the Sigma « Our world » contest. Sigma is a manufacturer that builds photographic lenses and camera, and has decided through this tour to focus on the quality of their products in a great capture. Even if the beginning focus on the manufacturer more than the story and that we could be afraid that it would be a big ad for Sigma, in the end, it is not the case.The book exists in ebook format and in a paperback edition.
The author, since he is not a professional photograph, takes a really interesting approach to build this book. We follow him through the pages in its travel around the world. From the United States to the Europe, we discover cities and places through his lenses. The book is not just an accumulation of photography with parameters. Each photography is followed by the story that brought the photograph to shoot the picture. Beyond the stories, each step of its travel is explained surrounded by the difficulties, the logistical problems and, better, the feelings that kind of travel brings.
The travel starts in the US from Washington to the new Orleans, the pictures are on one hand splendid and colorful, on the other hand, the black and white pictures are full of story and textures. I love long exposure photography and this book has really beautiful ones. After that, the Canada follows with Vancouver and Toronto, then follows the south america with Rio.
Africa comes with its great landscapes and portraits. The shoots are made to bring you there with a sense of curiosity. The pictures of Morocco are splendid, followed by Dubai and Jordan. The colorful India and China are present too. Finally, the pop colored japan is like the designer’s republic imagines it. And Seoul?…. Well, maybe the weakest point of the book appears here. With so much pictures and places, it can be regretted that some cities or places are not covered by the tour. The magnificent Seoul and its palaces, or the cappadocian valleys in Turkey would have brought interesting challenges and pictures. Most of the places seem to be more "common" hot spots than a real travel investigation to cover too unexplored areas with challenging pictures.
The last interesting point is the acknowledgement. In fact behind, all photographs, there is a wife or a husband that take cares and motives you. Acknowledging them, by giving a dedicated place, is important, and it is well placed in this book.
In the end, the book is full of beautiful pictures from interesting perspectives of rich places. The fact that Sigma is behind the project is removed along the pages of the book, and it let the place for an interesting travel full of images. If you think now why I am recommending this book, the matter is that to take great pictures under the sea, it is important also to learn photography beyond the underwater environment and the techniques. Another reason is that when we travel to reach new underwater environments, we often forget that there is a life around and away from the sea too. Sometimes mixing both perspectives gives to our travels great tastes. I will open again this book in the future, because travelling is made also with the spirit.
